History of Midnight Madness

Midnight Madness began in 1971 or 1972  as a marathon from Ames to Boone Iowa during the time US Highway 30 was under construction.  In those days roads were not completed as fast as they are these days.  The marathon ran on the road surface beginning at midnight and ending of course when the last runner finished and thus Midnight Madness. The first race had 17 runners and maybe twice that for the second marathon.     The third year started by running up to 5-5K loops around the ISU Center where you could choose when to stop. Eventually the format was 5K, 10K, 20K. In the early 80's the number of runners reached nearly 2500 runners.  In 1991 the event moved from the ISU Center to Main street in downtown Ames and has been there ever since. The 10K has been the premier race at Midnight Madness with the 5K with the most participants. What has not changed is the popular Post Race party following the last race which usually includes a live band and a pasta feed with some libations.        Midnight Madness has become a great place not only to race against others on a certified course but to also socialize with fellow runners....to get to know new ones and especially to rekindle those familiar friends.  Midnight Madness is a great Event.
